Would you buy a horse with melanomas?

Another affirmation that the OP gave Rani exactly what was needed. Who is to say that every horse is meant to have X years of life, or Y type of owner? No. The OP gave of her heart and mind, as does the horse. Exactly right, and a peaceful ending.

I’m so very sorry. You have gone above and beyond for her. Your story is just one example of why I won’t own or breed to a gray horse. Such a heartbreaking experience.

Hugs! You did all you could, and she knew nothing but love and kindness these last few months. Hold that close to your heart, and know she loved you in return. Thank you for caring.

My heart is breaking for you. This is no cautionary tale. This is the tale of someone with so much love in their heart that they wanted to give this beautiful mare as much quality time as possible for the time she had left on this earth. Only a very special and brave person could do what you have done.

Please try to remember that the time she had with you was the best time of her life. She knew she was loved and cared for. As painful as it is, that is all any of us can do - love them with all our hearts, make the best, informed decisions we can for them and keep them in our hearts until we are reunited with them.

I will be thinking of you in the days and weeks ahead and praying that you will find peace and comfort in your memories of Rani. Sending you hugs and all my love. :heart:

Oh @ratchet – my heart breaks for you. Rani left this world loved, cared for, and cherished – we should all be so lucky. Sending you huge hugs.

(I worry that my girl Nim may not be far behind – the tumours on her dock are growing aggressively. It’s good to have us fellow grey-lovers in one space :heart:)

I’m so sorry. I’ve followed this thread, and this isn’t how I wanted it to end at all.

You did your best, and she knew it. You loved her, and she knew it. And you gave her the gift of a kind, painless end, and she knew that as well.

You saved her, and she knew it.

Oh no. I just came back to this thread and I am crying at my desk. There are no words sufficient to ease the pain. But you gave so much love. Arabians do love their people and she had you when it counted the most. What a wonderful end for her. I will keep you in my thoughts and jingle the curb chain for your healing and peace. {Ratchet}

So sorry for your loss. You gave her so much love particularly when she needed it the most. I had 15 wonderful years with my guy who lived with melanomas for the last 5 or so years. Made the same decision about four months ago. He just wasn’t doing well and his quality of life had started to decline. Its such a tough decision but I have zero regrets. Not for having him in my life or the decision I made to have him leave it. You just love them the best that you can in the time that you have with them!

Thank you everyone, I wish I had the energy to reply to each and every one of you.

It’s been a very hard few days. I am a bit surprised by how hard I’ve been mourning a horse I only knew for a few months. I went and retrieved her tail, halter, and fly mask yesterday from the clinic. I wasn’t able to really look at them until this morning. If anyone has ever made a bracelet, or some sort of keepsake from a passed horse’s tail, can you let me know who you sent it to or what precisely you did with it?
