Yet Another New Horse - It's Peach!

I remember a chestnut pony years ago with the same markings … his name was Lost My Sock.

Peach, Peaches or Peachy is perfect. I approve (not that you need my approval ).

Oh I love that name!! And I have to agree with Findeight, none of my ditch dogs ever looked so attractive! Thanks for doing right by those two dogs, I hope the new people keep them and don’t bother returning them…

Today Peachy popped a massive abscess on his LF, and he’s pretty sure his leg is going to fall off. I’ve reassured him that it will be fine, really, but for now he’s resting.

Poor Peachy! Feel better soon, Buddy!

Maybe he should be called Princess Peach then. a bit of a dramatic flair.

Peachy really takes the cake on abscess drama. Yesterday afternoon was rough, and he basically laid down and waited to die from heat stroke. When I found him in a full body sweat the first time, he just flat wouldn’t even try to get up. I did eventually get him up with a lot of serious encouragement, and cold hosed him until he cooled down, then packed and wrapped the foot hoping to offer a little relief. But several hours later, he did it again. I really wanted to put him in the barn with the fan, but was too worried he’d make poor decisions and get himself cast or otherwise stuck in a way that would be much harder to fix in a confined space. I ended up giving him banamine to try and calm down the pain.

This morning he’s still hobbling, but is much more willing to try moving around so I think we’re starting to turn the corner. In his defense, it IS a pretty large abscess (a weeping crack that runs from mid foot to toe) and it’s just starting to burst through the sole at the toe.

On the up side, he is filling in nicely and has a good appetite.

Bad plan, Peachy! C’mon, buddy, you’re tougher than that.

I wonder if Tylenol would work better.

Oh c’mon Peach!! No more laying down flat in the sun! At least not in this weather… it’s been so brutally hot lately. Glad you were able to get him up and hosed down, and that he seems to be doing better today!

I’m such a sucker for a flaxen chestnut with chrome. Easily my fav color. So glad you were able to give this guy a soft landing, and looking forward to seeing him bloom under your care. Thank you for sharing your journey here!

I think abcesses are brutally painful so I don’t fault him a bit!

One trick I’ve learned to help abscesses pop and drain is to put a couple 8-hour hand warmers inside the wrap. I always put icthamol on the coronet band and sole. Then a baby diaper, the hand warmers, a second baby diaper, cover with vet wrap then top it all with gorilla tape. My wraps stay ON and the hand warmers keep everything simmering to promote drainage.

OY! Mid foot to toe, that is a painful and big abcess.

I second 2bays method. That is how we used to treat abcesses, but without the 8hr hand warmers, that is a great idea!

But you couldn’t just leave them! They look 100% rehome-able… If you can bear to let them go in the future.

Agreed. I describe them to the non-initiated as a giant pimple that you have to walk on.

My brother is a tough guy, really tough. He hit the side of his thumb one time and it got infected under the nail. A man that I’d seen push through major pain was reduced to moaning uncontrollably. The Dr drilled a hole in the nail and told him to soak it in warm water with Epsom salt, and gave him antibiotics. My brother said as soon as the pressure under the nail was relieved the pain became almost nonexistent. I’ve always imagined a hoof abcess to be similar so I treat with a pain reliever and soak/pack.

Ooh, yeah! I smashed my thumb years ago and remember every bit of your story. That’s a great analogy.
